Notice Re Continuing Professional Education For Re-Registration Of Medical Practitioners

In previous notices the Medical Council published details of the Continuing Professional Education (CPE) assessment scheme for re-registration of medical practitioners for the year 2013. It was noted that CPE activity for this initial year would only be assessed on the 18- month period between the enactment of the new Medical Profession Act, 2011-1 and the end of December 2012. Assessments in subsequent years will be based on the 12-month calendar year.

It was also announced that activity for the initial period, and subsequent calendar years would be valid for accreditation for up to 3-years. Therefore, activity assessed in this initial period is valid for accreditation for the years 2013-15 ONLY. Activities completed in 2013 will be valid for the years 2014-16.

In order to facilitate the registration of practitioners before Jan 31st 2013, and thus avoid paying double the registration fee, Council announced that practitioners who applied for CPE credits by 1st December 2012 would have their applications processed by January 15, 2013.

The Medical Council reports that as of 15th January 2013, all applications made up to 11th January 2013 have been assessed. Of the 583 medical practitioners on the register in 2012, 520 have made applications.

  • 77 medical practitioners are accredited for the years 2013-15.
  • 152 medical practitioners are accredited for the years 2013-14.
  • 221 medical practitioners are accredited for the year 2013 only.
  • 70 medical practitioners require additional credits for re-registration and have until the 31st March 2013 to complete the requirements to be registered for 2013.

Practitioners who have not applied for CPE accreditation also have until the 31st March 2013 to complete the requirements to be registered for 2013.

Council wishes to remind medical practitioners that practising medicine without being registered is unlawful.
