Dental Council: Choose Qualified Professionals

The Dental Council of Barbados has reminded the public that only trained and certified dental professionals are qualified to perform dental procedures such as braces, fillings, veneers, bleaching, crowns, gold crowns and dentures.

The Council has expressed concern that licensed dentists are increasingly treating patients whose teeth have been irreversibly damaged by untrained practitioners. It further noted that, in some cases, these treatments were being provided free of charge to help those affected.

The Council also warned members of the public that choosing unqualified individuals for dental work could put their health at serious risk. Some of the dangers include:

  • Infections caused by unsterilised instruments or unsafe materials.
  • Exposure of their private information, as unregistered operators do not follow patient privacy standards.
  • Oral diseases becoming worse or left untreated due to improper care.
  • Permanent damage to their teeth, gums and mouth from incorrect procedures.
  • No legal protection or recourse if something goes wrong since these individuals are not recognised by any health or dental authority.

Members of the public are advised that if they or their children have been harmed or taken advantage of by someone offering dental services without proper qualifications, they should contact the Dental Council by emailing dental.council@health.gov.bb or calling 536-3906.

“Together, we can protect our community and ensure everyone receives safe, professional and ethical dental care,” the Council stated.
